The Netherlands Institute in Sint-Petersburg (NIP) will present birthday city St Petersburg with a special gift: the financing of the restoration of the Dutch Atlas Civitates orbis terrarum. Libr.1/ Frans Hogenberg, Georgius Braun – Köln, dating from 1577 and idem Libr.3 dating from 1581 which are part of the collection of the Russian National Library. The process of restoration will take eighteen months. In September 2004 the atlas will be on temporary display. During the process of restoring the atlas, several academic and public activities will be organised, like a conference about the Cartography of Holland's golden age on 23 and 24 September.

Maps and atlases from the collection of the National Library will be on display from 23 September 2003 onwards. This exhibition will also include copies of prints of F. Hogenberg from the State Hermitage Museum. In September 2004, the restored atlas will be presented together with a publication about the process of restoring and about the conference. The gift will be presented by the six Dutch universities that founded the Netherlands Institute in St Petersburg, the Instituut Collectie Nederland and the Wilhelmina Jansen Fund.
