The Holland Festival Early Music Utrecht, the largest and most important festival of its kind in the world, will dedicate its contribution to the 300-year anniversary of St. Petersburg to cementing relations with its younger colleague, the St. Petersburg International Early Music Festival. Highlight of this partnership will be the performance of Giovanni Paisiello's opera I filosofi immaginari, which was written for Catharina the Great. This comic opera will be performed at its original location the Hermitage Theatre for the first time in more than 200 years. Performances will take place on 28 and 29 September 2003, as part of Days of Dutch Culture. For the concerts, the Catharina the Great Orchestra, recently founded as resident orchestra of the St. Petersburg Festival, will be joined by Dutch players of wind instruments. The bilateral character of this co-production will be reflected in the cast of soloists with two Russian and two Dutch singers. Spanish conductor Eduardo López Banzo will act as musical director. Stage design is by Javier López Piñon.
