Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam: COBRA exhibitionDates: 16 May - 28 September Location: Petrovskaya Gallery of the State Hermitage Exhibition
COBRA and contemporaries, part of the international tour: The Past of the
Present The State Hermitage
Museum in St. Petersburg will be the first location of the international tour of
The Past of the Present, organised by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and
Dutch bank ABN AMRO. As part of this tour, a special overview of the COBRA
collection of the Stedelijk Museum will be presented at the Petrovskaya Gallery,
which is linked to the section showing 17th century Dutch art of the Hermitage.
The exhibition will represent the
contribution of the city of Amsterdam to the festivities of St. Petersburg’s
300-year anniversary. The exhibition will
comprise a selection of about one hundred works; sixty paintings, several works
on paper and some sculptures. From its own collection, ABN AMRO will lend three
works of art, which also have been selected by curators of the Stedelijk Museum.
The COBRA and contemporaries exhibition at the Hermitage was opened
officially on 16 May 2003 and will continue until 30 September 2003. Works by
the following artists will be shown: Pierre Alechinksy, Karel Appel, Eugene
Brands, Constant, Corneille, Lotti van der Gaag, Henry Heerup, Arne Jacobsen,
Asger Jorn, Lucebert, Pieter Ouborg, Carl-Henning Pedersen, Anton Rooskens,
Shinkichi Tajiri and Theo Wolvecamp. For the Museum, the
tour of The Past of the Present is a means of increasing exposure of its
vast collection. This is especially important now that the museum will be
closing its doors for an extensive renovation soon. Also, the museum aims to
increase international recognition of its collection. After St. Petersburg,
cities like Shanghai, Singapore, São Paulo and Chicago will show works of the
Stedelijk Museum, but these exhibitions will be different from the one in St.
Petersburg. More details about the
tour will be announced at a press conference. For information on The Past of the Present, please contact the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, press office pressoffice@stedelijk.nl.
